I had never been to this part of West Virginia when the Owners of this vacant lot in a resort area of the Canaan Valley asked me to design their vacation home. With the lot being forested, views were not the issue here. They provided me with a topo for the lot, plenty of pictures, some planbook plans that they liked but that did not quite suit, and an overall feel they wanted to achieve. For this home, the challenges were the lot topography and orienting the home to take advantage of the sun, the land, and the forest surrounding it, while still meeting their needs and desires for their home away from home. This weekend retreat house also had to accommodate a large and active family.
The interior of this home is painted and trimmed in a style reminiscent of the Arts & Crafts period, and uses different natural woods on the ceilings to enhance the experience of a vacation home in the forested mountain valley. An open floor plan connects the primary living spaces on the first floor. A master bedroom and bath suite is also on the first floor. But, the focal point is the tall outdoor fireplace in the screened porch off the Great Room. Even 50 degree evenings on the screened porch are cozy with the fireplace crackling. On the second floor are three bedrooms and two baths. There is also a multi-purpose basement living area that accommodates a pool table, large media room with bar, an additional large bedroom and bath, and outside sits the hot tub for after those long hikes through the woods, or for apres-ski soaking.
Exterior cedar shake and vertical cedar siding marry the home to the natural surroundings. The use of stone on the foundation and fireplace help visually anchor the home on its slope, while the use of green-hued window frames and green-hued accents with the cedar siding complete the right-at-home-in-the-woods look.
