Tilghman-on-Chesapeake is a newer residential subdivision on Tilghman Island. On one of the few remaining vacant lots in the original phase, the owners asked me to create a home that would take in the wonderful water views and fit in architecturally within the community. Unlike many waterfront homes where the main view is out the back of the house, this lot is situated such that the best views are from the front. This created the challenge of bringing people into the front entrance, and then getting them turned around 180 degrees to see the views while enjoying the home.
The concept was to create a central meeting area in the house that is open to the second floor, and further open all the way to the cupola above, thereby letting light flood the center of the home. This layout also provides a design feature of significant visual interest to enjoy. Off the central meeting area are individual living spaces that are still very connected to the rest of the home. On the first floor, the living room, family room and eat-in kitchen all have the main water views, while the master bedroom and other rooms enjoy more privacy. On the second floor, an additional master bedroom, office area, and screened porch also take advantage of the big water views.
The exterior of the home features Hardi sidings, Azek trims, and hurricane-rated windows for durability and low maintenance. Copper roof accents add visual interest to the exterior while helping tie the home to the history of the surrounding fishing community, where metal roofing was common.
